Driver Assistance Systems

The vehicle intervenes at the moment of risk, which is weeks earlier than any coaching programme. How the two interact, and badly.

Modern vehicles brake, steer and warn on their own. That changes both the risk and the data a behaviour system produces.

What they do

Autonomous emergency braking, which acts when a collision is imminent.

Lane keeping and lane departure warning.

Blind spot and cross-traffic alerts.

Adaptive cruise control, which changes the whole braking profile of a journey.

Speed limiters and intelligent speed assistance, increasingly fitted as standard in some markets.

Why they outrank coaching

They act in the second that matters.

Coaching acts weeks later, on a person who may not remember the event.

Which makes vehicle selection a larger safety lever than any monitoring programme, and one that applies to every driver immediately including new starters.

A fleet debating a scoring system while running vehicles without emergency braking has its priorities inverted.

How they distort the behaviour data

An emergency braking intervention registers as a harsh braking event by the driver.

Which is the opposite of what happened: the system braked because the driver did not, or a third party created the hazard.

Adaptive cruise smooths acceleration and braking, so a driver using it scores better with no change in skill.

And lane keeping suppresses the drift that fatigue detection relies on, masking a signal.

A score compared across vehicles with different assistance systems is comparing the vehicles.

Separating them

Ask whether the platform distinguishes driver-initiated from system-initiated events.

Better products read the intervention flags from the vehicle bus and label them.

Where they cannot, events on assisted vehicles need a caveat and should not be pooled with unassisted ones.

This is a procurement question, and it becomes more important each model year as fitment spreads.

The interventions as data

A high rate of emergency braking interventions on one route is a route finding.

On one driver, across routes, it is a following-distance conversation — and a more meaningful one than a harsh braking count, because the system only acts when a collision was close.

Lane departure frequency at particular times of day is a fatigue signal available without a cab camera.

The practical conclusion

Specify assistance systems at purchase.

Then measure behaviour, knowing the vehicle is doing part of the work.

And never compare drivers across vehicle generations without saying so.
