What This Subject Is Not

The framings this collection deliberately rejects, stated plainly in one place.

Reference · Analysis

Driver behaviour monitoring is sold and discussed in ways these notes do not follow. The differences are deliberate.

Not a measurement of driving skill

It measures decelerations, speeds against a map, and in some systems eye position.

Judgement, anticipation and hazard perception — which is most of driving — are not in the data.

Not a ranking system

A ranking sorts by route type, vehicle generation and exposure before it sorts by person.

Which makes a league table a description of the allocation, and everyone who drives knows it.

Not a substitute for the structural work

Schedules, vehicles, rotas and routes contribute more to collision risk than behaviour does.

A programme addressing only the last of these is addressing a minority of the variance, at the point furthest from the cause.

Not a productivity tool

The justification was safety.

A system used for break monitoring or timekeeping has changed purpose, which is both a compliance problem and the fastest way to lose the cooperation the data depends on.

Not an evidence-free field

The relationship between speed and collision severity is well supported.

The relationship between harsh event counts and collisions is real and modest.

The effectiveness of coaching programmes is weakly evidenced, mostly through studies without control groups.

Saying which is which is what makes a business case survive contact with an outcome.

Not optional to explain

A score used to affect someone's work must be explicable to them.

A proprietary model fails this, and the failure is discovered at the worst moment.

What it is

A way to identify specific events worth a conversation.

A source of evidence after an incident.

A detector of structural problems — junctions, rounds, vehicles, rotas — which is its most valuable output and the one least often used.

Three things, done well, and claiming more is what makes the three less credible.

Why the framing decides the outcome

Because it determines what gets bought and how it lands.

Framed as driver measurement, the programme produces rankings, disputes and withdrawal.

Framed as incident evidence plus structural detection, it produces findings about the operation and a coaching channel people use.

Identical hardware, different results, and the framing is chosen before the first meeting.

Reproduce the workflow
